Cauda Equina Syndrome

The ST3 orthopaedic recruitment interview process is designed to ensure that when you become an ortho registrar / ST3 that you are likely to be safe.  Therefore it is expected that you should be able to deal with the diagnosis, assesment and management of orthopaedic emergencies.  Cauda Equina syndrome fits into the category.  It is a neurosurgical emergency, but as neurosurgery is likely to be based at a regional unit it is likely that at many of the district general hospitals the orthoapedic registrar oncall will be see these patients first. Asses them, arrange appropriate imaging and subsequently refer them on if necessary.  As this is a serious emergency case it is essential therefore that you understand how to manage it.
